Sofya Alekseevna (September 17/27, 1657, Moscow – July 3/14, 1704, Moscow) – Tsarevna, fourth daughter of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich from marriage with Maria Ilyinichny Miloslavskaya. I came to power as a result of the uprising of Sagittarius in Moscow (1682). From May 1682 to September 1689 – ruler of the Moscow state, regent under the younger brothers Peter and Ivan. In September 1689, the name of Sophia was excluded from the tsarist title; The princess herself was arrested in the Novodevichy Monastery. Three portraits of Sophia Alekseevna of this type are known. After Sofia’s conspiracy was disclosed, most of her images were destroyed. The portrait of Sofya Alekseevna from the Romanov Gallery goes back to portraits from the “titular” of 1672, richly decorated with engraved portraits of reigning persons. The new detail is the image of the double -headed eagle, on the wings of which there are six medallions with allegorical figures of “piety”, “virginity”, “mercy”, “justice”, “fortress” and “meekness”.
